Raceday Update: Millbuie Heads to Hamilton

It’s been a quieter start to the weekend at Ewan Whillans Racing, but we’re kicking things off with a promising runner today as Millbuie lines up in the 2:15 at Hamilton Park, partnered by capable apprentice Archie Young.

Millbuie heads into today’s contest with solid preparation and plenty of promise. While the drop back in trip isn’t absolutely ideal for him, race options have been limited recently, and this looks a fair opportunity for him to remain competitive—especially with conditions likely to suit.

The ground at Hamilton is currently on the softer side of good, which should play to Millbuie’s strengths. He’s always preferred a bit of give underfoot, and we’re hopeful the surface will bring out the best in him.

Today’s race is restricted to apprentices, but we’re confident in Archie Young, who brings with him a decent amount of experience in the saddle. He knows how to handle a tactical race, and we’re pleased to have him aboard as Millbuie wears first-time visors, which we hope will sharpen him up and help him focus fully on the task ahead.

Strengthened Over the Winter

Millbuie has always been a horse who has shown ability at home. Last year, he was still on the weak side—both physically and mentally—but we’ve really seen him come into his own over the winter and into the spring. He’s strengthened up noticeably and is carrying himself with far more authority on the gallops.

He’s shown glimpses of that ability on the track, and if he brings his home performance to the racecourse today, we’d be very hopeful of a solid run. A place finish is certainly within reach, and if things go his way in running, a win isn’t out of the question.

A Busy Weekend Ahead at Newmill Stables

While Millbuie is our sole runner today, things are about to ramp up quickly. We’ve got seven horses entered across the weekend, and it’s shaping up to be a very busy few days for the whole team at Newmill Stables.
