New Arrival at Ewan Whillans Racing – A Striking Prospect from Tattersalls Ireland
Sumbal X Bespoke Baby
We’re excited to announce the first new addition to the Ewan Whillans Racing team from this year’s Tattersalls Ireland July Sale – and what a prospect he is.
Introducing a chestnut gelding by Sumbal (IRE) out of Bespoke Baby (IRE), foaled on April 10th, 2022. Unbroken, unraced, and as yet unnamed, this gelding carries all the credentials of a future star and becomes the latest horse to join the Newmill Stables.
He’s a half-brother to Bespoke Tailor, who gave us a fantastic run of success last season, so we were keen to keep this family line in the yard. His physical presence at the sales only strengthened our belief – he’s a stunning, correct, and athletic individual, with a great walk and a calm temperament. The moment we laid eyes on him, he became a top target.
Pedigree Insight
His sire, Sumbal (IRE), is a Group 2 winner by Danehill Dancer, from the influential sire line of Danehill. Sumbal was a high-class performer on the track, winning the Prix Greffulhe (Group 2) in France and placing in top-tier company including the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan. He has now turned his attention to National Hunt breeding and is beginning to make his mark with his progeny.
On the dam side, Bespoke Baby (IRE) is by Invincible Spirit, one of Europe’s most consistent and successful sires known for passing on toughness and speed. She has already produced two winners from four runners, including the aforementioned Bespoke Tailor and Invincible Cave, a five-time winner over hurdles and fences, earning over £31,000.
The page is rich in National Hunt influence. The second dam, Penny Gold, is also the dam of Katies Tutor (GB), an eight-time winner over hurdles and on the flat, with earnings of over £99,000, while the family traces back to black-type performers and multiple winners across both codes.
What’s Next?
We’re thrilled to have secured this gelding and can’t wait to get him home and start the process. There’s plenty of scope and potential to work with, and he looks every inch a future racehorse. With his strong staying pedigree, toughness on both sides, and the raw potential we’ve already seen, we’re hopeful he’ll be one to look forward to.
Stay tuned for more updates from the sales – this is just the start, and we may have a few more surprises yet to come.
